Global events in the news may exacerbate the exclusion of Muslim individuals on campus, as divisiveness around politics and current events can be projected at individuals. Many individuals lack a deep understanding of the cultural and religious practices of Muslim students, faculty and staff, and how to create inclusion for those from this community overall. This can result in unintentional microaggressions or overlooking specific needs, as well as communications and institutional practices that are biased and harmful.
