Panelist Bio - Elizabeth Sanghavi and Kate Upatham

Elizabeth Sanghavi and Kate Upatham, both attorneys with Sanghavi Law Office, LLC, provide guidance to schools on compliance with Section 504 and the ADA, with Title IX and with Title VI. They also conduct internal investigations for colleges and universities. In addition, Elizabeth and Kate conduct trainings for schools and review policies, procedures and practices for compliance with a wide range of education-related laws. 

 

Prior to starting Sanghavi Law Office, Elizabeth was a Boston-based associate at Holland & Knight, a large national law firm, where she represented secondary and post-secondary schools in a variety of matters. Elizabeth also worked as a Civil Rights Attorney with schools in a variety of matters. Elizabeth also worked as a Civil Rights Attorney with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, where she conducted investigations on a variety of issues, including sex, disability and race discrimination. 

 

Kate has eight years of experience working as a Civil Rights Attorney with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, where she conducted individual and systemic investigations into schools’ compliance with various civil rights laws, including in the area of access to programs and activities by persons with disabilities. Kate’s work at OCR, and her earlier work as a labor and employment lawyer, gives her valuable expertise on which to draw in advising schools on their obligations regarding sex, race, national origin, age and disability discrimination.
