Academic Adjustments & Auxiliary Aids: Address Accommodation Requests for On-Campus & Virtual Instruction – On-Demand Training

Overview
Address Accommodation Requests for On-Campus & Virtual Instruction

The academic accommodation process can be challenging and confusing even during normal times, and the current pandemic has exacerbated these challenges for some institutions. Ensuring auxiliary aids such as accessible electronic and information technology; qualified interpreters on-site or through video remote interpreting (VRI) services; open and closed captioning, including real-time captioning; notetakers; brailed materials and displays are available can be overwhelming and costly for your campus to provide. How do you determine what is reasonable and what is not? Is what was reasonable for on-campus instruction also reasonable for virtual instruction?

Join us as we examine the academic accommodation process from start to finish. Our expert presenters — one a former OCR attorney and one a former OCR investigator and trainer — will share real world examples and the top four compliance concerns involving academic adjustments and auxiliary aids that will help you frame your institutional response to issues more effectively. Be confident that your campus has a compliant accommodation process to avoid an OCR investigation or costly fines and provide your entire student population the opportunity to engage, succeed and persist.

Topics Covered
As a result of this webinar, you will be able to:
  • Adapt current institutional processes for determining academic adjustments and auxiliary aids to comport with current realities created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Understand the process for determining reasonable accommodations for your students in order to adequately meet valid requests — assert the “fundamental alteration” exception as a reason not to provide an academic adjustment or auxiliary aid.
  • Identify who qualifies for reasonable accommodations in the classroom — justify resources being directed toward meeting your students’ needs and properly address faculty objection or interference in the process.
  • Comprehend your Institutional rights and responsibilities — avoid lawsuits, reasonable accommodations confusion and non-compliance problems through a properly documented compliance standard.
  • Establish or amend policies/procedures pertaining to ADA guidelines when working with third parties — ensure proper accommodations are provided when a student is off-site doing an internship or completing an academic requirement.
  • Identify the legal requirements outlined in Section 508 of The Rehabilitation Act and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) — know the law, mandated requirements and your responsibilities to ensure compliance from beginning to end.
