When the University at Albany Athletic Department – also known as the Great Danes – learned that 22 rescued Great Dane dogs were in need, they banded together to provide support for their namesakes. Student-athletes and coaching staffs have been raising awareness and encouraging supporters to make donations to the animal welfare agencies currently taking care of the dogs ranging in age from puppies to two-year-olds.

The dogs were found undernourished and confined to a house in poor condition when their owner passed away, reported WTEN News 10.

“As engaged community members, we support our coaches, staff, and student-athletes to be great leaders both on and off the field,” UAlbany Director of Athletics Mark Benson told the station. “These animals need our help. It is a great opportunity to show who we are as a university by aiding fellow Great Danes. We are asking the community to come together for a cause that touches all of our hearts.”
